In 2002 Johannesburg's public transport company received the first new urban double-deckers in South Africa since almost 2 decades. They are built on Volvo's new B7TL low-floor chassis and feature Marcopolo bodywork, assembled in Marcopolo's new South African factory. The 100 new buses were supposed to be in service before the World Summit on Sustainable Development that took place in Johannesburg in September 2002, but not all had been delivered then. In 2000 the municipal bus service (Johannesburg Transport) was re-organized into a corporation and became Metro Bus.
