DAF SB220/Den Oudsten Alliance Bus

Model: B89/DAF - Photo: August 1999 by John Veerkamp

Den Oudsten's first Alliance body was mounted on a DAF SB220 rear engine chassis in 1989. After testing and demonstrations this bus was rebuilt with a luxury interior and presented to the Queen of the Netherlands. It is now used as the "Royal Bus" on special occasions and is seen in the picture in front of the royal palace on the Dam in Amsterdam on January 31, 1998 on the occasion of Queen Beatrix' 60th birthday (below). Until 1996 a total of 107 DAF SB220 Alliance buses were built, 30 of which initially went to Germany, though most were later sold in the Netherlands and Belgium. VSL, later Hermes, in the province of Limburg, was the largest Dutch customer, with BBA and ZWN, now Connexxion, each taking one series. The pictures show a an Arriva, ex DVM-NWH bus in Hoogeveen. The DVM-NWH buses were ex German demonstrators. These earlier Alliance buses all have profiled skirts that were replaced by smooth ones on later models.
